“We have our union now, so we can protect and stand up for ourselves. We have fair and equal treatment and a peace of mind that we didn’t have before. If you get the opportunity to become Teamsters, take it!”

Throughout the country, school bus workers are standing together to make improvements in wages, working conditions and benefits by forming a union. And we are making real progress.

We’ve raised wages:
In Norwich, Connecticut, we bargained wage increases from 5 to nearly 23 percent and performance bonuses totaling $400 each year with up to four missed work days.

In Worcester Massachusetts, we bargained for more than a 17 percent increase in wages over five years, and added monthly attendance and annual safety bonuses.

Manchester, Connecticut, workers bargained average wage increases of 11.5 to 22 percent over the term of their three-year contract.

Danville, Illinois, workers negotiated 7 percent, 6 percent and 6 percent wage increases into their first agreement.

We’ve negotiated job protections:

In Beaufort County, South Carolina, Teamster school bus drivers negotiated the right for any unresolved workplace grievances to be heard by the Piedmont Grievance Committee, a top-tier, multi-Teamsters Local Union/multi-employer committee with participants throughout the South, eastern Seaboard and mid-Atlantic states.

In Danville, Teamsters bargained language that requires field trip and charter work to be assigned by seniority on a wheel (i.e., workers with highest seniority get first choice, then are moved to the bottom of the rotation).

We’ve added benefits:

Dozens of Teamster yards have bargained paid jury duty, bereavement days, weather (or snow) days and increases in holidays.

Several Teamster local unions have bargained employer contributions to their health care and 401(k) plans. Additionally, the Teamsters Union has developed an affordable health care plan designed specifically for bus workers as an option during bargaining.

Thousands of Teamster school bus drivers are now covered under legally binding collective bargaining agreements that will improve their lives.
