Yep, the title says it all. I got suspended for attempting to file 2 grievances.
I went into the managers office (as Chief Steward) with the union treasurer to file two grievances. Before I was even allowed to approach I was asked if they were signed by the union president, they were not. Then asked if the union president was present, she was not. Finally he asks if she was aware of the grievance, which she was. At that point the contract manager refused to let the grievances be filed. He was getting visably angered when I asked for a reason, finally he claimed that he would only accept a grievance if the union president is present or signs the grievance. I tried to explain that his actions were in violation of the contract but I was interrupted and attempted to be dismissed by his words and actions. Finally the tempest bioled over and I was "requested" to leave the office. One week later I get a 3 day suspension for "insubordination" even though I was not clocked in at the time. Just wanted to let everyone know how messed up the First Student mindset it these days.

I certainly hope you filed
I certainly hope you filed LABOR CHARGES and another greivance against that manager. All that manager had to do was write greivance denied and sign it ! Then the local's president would step in. How long have you had a contract and what terminal are you from ?
The manager took Friday off
The manager took Friday off so we filed the grievance today citing the immunity granted to shop stewards. I even went so far as to give management a copy of the legal rights afforded to shop stewards. The ball is in their court, if the grievance comes back denied we will file a ULP for bad faith bargaining. If it comes back agreed I just had a nice paid vacation thanks to first student. We are in the 2nd year of our first 3 year contract. Millcreek(Erie) Pennsylvania is our location.
We had a step 2 grievance
We had a step 2 grievance meeting and even when we showed management in black and white that the Chief Steward was performing his duties as a steward and is immune to any insubordination claims management still denied the grievance.
This is a perfect example of how anti union and anti worker First Student truly is. They knew they were wrong then when they tried to deny the union the right to file a grievance and they are wrong now clinging to their insubordination charge even when proved unwinnable. Personally I cannot wait until this goes to arbitration and the union prevails and I get to tell the manager what a good job he did pissing away $5,000 of the companies money over a $250 bogus suspension.
