Stewards

I was wondering if someone from another location could help me out.  We have 1 Steward and 2 Alternate Stewards. What exactly is the difference between the two?  My understanding was that you could go to an alternate only if the Steward was unavailable.  Not because you prefer one of the alternates over them.  Is this correct?

At our terminal,  we have

At our terminal,  we have the same.  Since we have two park out lots in different towns, if someone needs a steward they can talk to the alternates.  Usually they go through the main steward.  I am sure that alternates can also bypass the main stewards if necessary.  It would be great if everyone worked together though so that all information can be shared.

The assistant stewards

The assistant stewards should assist anyone who approaches them with an issue.

I am the head steward at my terminal ( 315 employees ) and I hold weekly meetings with them so we can update each other. Our contract says assistants will address issues with management  only if the head steward is unavailable.

If a co-worker feels they would rather have one of the alternates ,that is respected.

Its all about working together ! If it is a serious situation or a payroll issue, management at my terminal will only address it with the head steward .

I will say that I feel that all stewards should promote a "team" atmosphere and have a geniune concern for all of the union membership at the terminal.

unfortunately,I have one assistant who is very combative with management  AND our co-workers.The grievances she files are ones that concern her issues only and I get alot of complaints from our membership. It is difficult at times when you have to deal with issues amongst each other.

I say don't sweat the small stuff, and dont go LOOKING  for trouble, trouble will always find you
