Pay in PA?

Thursday, March 5, 2009

Ok I am thinking of moving to PA and am wondering what drivers of a big bus get paid. I know it isn't what I make here on Long Island. So if you all can let me know what you make an hour that would be great.

Nine bridges and thirteen

Nine bridges and thirteen tunnels connect Brooklyn and Queens (and thus Long Island) to the three other boroughs of New York City. After my microsoft practice exams me must viist here. Ferries connect Suffolk County northward across long island to the state of Connecticut.

I know this is an older

I know this is an older thread but I just joined and thought I could let you know about up here in Erie, Pa.  At our FS location we are AFSCME and are 1/2 way through our first contract.  Wages start at $10.00/hr with different scales for non driving/meeting/training.  The cost of living in Erie is far less than Long Island most likely.  Hope that helps.

OMG $10.00 an hour can't be enough to live on anywhere I would think. Thank you for the reply.

                         please reply back

That is a real piss poor

That is a real piss poor excuse they gave you. When FS bought Ryder and Laidlaw, the two largest, they spent a fortune each time and we still got raises. It sounds like they are begging you to go union!

You only get $9.75 as a driver? Our starting was $11 to $12 pre union in South Jersey. Where is your location?

It is far from a living wage

It is far from a living wage when most driver work less than 30 hours a week., that is why we formed a union.  What confuses the hell out of me is the fact that out of the 120 or so driver only 40 joined the union.  There is so much anti-union bullshit that is coming from the republican camp that I spend most of my day dispelling these overt lies (the union does nothing for us, our dues go to politician I don't support, I'd get more without the union, Ect.)  I have been active since we first made a petition to form and served on the executive board since day 1.  I try to keep positive but the negativity from management and the walls that are put up preventing us from discussing the real issues as a whole are daunting.  (can't talk union during work hours, or on the bus, or notify members of meeting via radio)  It is hard to get message out.  To top it off FS payroll is dragging their feet and still have not taken out union dues a year later dispute an ULP hanging over their heads.  No union dues no money for mailings, locking bulletin board, union hall rental...nothing.  Seems like an uphill battle at every turn.

If you have a union shop

If you have a union shop then all the drivers must be union. You cant have some in the union and some not in it. Is this a Teamsters union? Doesn't sound like one to me. It sounds like you had a vote and it was turned down, you are not in the union.

There are right to work

There are right to work states where people do not have to join a union.

Wow I didn't know that you

Wow I didn't know that you were allowed to have union and non union working at the same location. They must run into trouble a lot.

We don't run into too many

We don't run into too many issues with union versus non-union.  The main issue is certain non union members are feverently ANTI union and go out of their way to cause disruptions in our efforts.  They do it the cowardly way, taking down notices , defacing the bulletin boards, little childish games like that when the drivers are on their runs.  They don't have the balls to do it when we are in the lounge.

Sounds

Sounds familiar........... I bet they sure do enjoy the  increase in all the benefits they got out of being union.

We are a union shop but in

We are a union shop but in Pennsylvania they are not required to be closed shop.  We have a fair share fee which in sligtly less than regular union dues that is assessed for anyone who decided not to join the union.  We are not teamsters, we are  an AFSCME local.

We are required to negotiate and represent all employees union or non union.  If a union person and a non union have a grievable issue we would represent both of them.  Non union workers do not have any of the members only union benefits nor do they have a right to vote or hold union office.

All the states in the North

All the states in the North East and Great Lakes region are considered 'Forced Unionism States'. But there are it seems some loop holes. http://www.nrtw.org/rtws.htm

In Cologne NJ we are Teamsters. We just went through a battle with the anti's. They wanted to deauthorize the dues for everyone by removing the part in the contract that stated that we were a closed shop. It was voted down. Their objective was to have the Teamsters drop us.

Now the way I understand it anyone who has not ever signed a card is not really a 'member'. So they can refuse to have dues taken out of their pay.

Then it will work just as madcow said; We are required to negotiate and represent all employees union or non union........
