Question for First Student People

Wednesday, March 5, 2008

I have a question to ask First Student people. Can you tell me what company policy is regarding Preventable vs non preventable accidents. Specifically I would like to know if you are retrained for preventable only. Since I am a Laidlaw person I have no idea what First Student policies are. Thanks for the input.

Over the years at our

Over the years at our terminal we have been instructed not to write up things try to work with the garage to fix it off of written paperwork.  Messages such as "I've ordered the part" have been told to the drivers and been told one the part comes in we will fix it etc etc.   Some of the issues mcsa 2003 .net certification dumps dealt with rear engine emergency windows that people were told "those windows are a pain.  If you continously open and close the wires break, the handles break etc".  Drivers were led to believe that they should only check these on occasion especially since before all inspections the buses were thoroughly checked for defects by people aiding in the inspection process.  This was not true this time.  Buses were pulled in and defects were found.  The lead inspector was PO'd to say the least and wanted to know who the drivers were.

It is surprising of how many things you can be reprimanded or teminated for, smoking on a bus, drinking coffee on a bus, eating on the bus, sleeping on the job(careful on those long charters), the list goes on for about three pages.

I was also Laidlaw and am now FS, we get retrained for preventable accidents only. They give us 2 hours of retraining at the training rate of pay, which is much less of course.

In the area that Hodgkins,

In the area that Hodgkins, Illinois First Student services near my home, in order to get from the west side of the Des Plaines River to the east side, there are four ways to go two of them are bridges that are rated at 5 tons. I have seen Fire Trucks go over them as well as School Buses. The rating system is the weight of a standing vehicle or weight. Think about it, with a bus you are dividing the weight of the bus with the front and rear axle. Your weight is spread out. By the time the bridge would flex at all from your bus weight, providing that you are not waiting on that bridge for a traffic light, you would be over the bridge on the opposite side. So it is 5 tons per axle.

It has been REMOVED from the handbook as of August 2009.  One of our employees who had been previously discharged for rearending someone was actually rehired after the change was made.  It was stated by our manager that that part of the policy was longer in effect.

I was a frist student

I was a frist student driver and I had a accident were I tap the bumper of the car,My foot wasn't even all the way off the pedal .16 years gone. but you can hit anything on the other three sides of the bus and you will get retrained . the damage was less then $500.00 In the handbook
on page 51. " Any rear collision will result in automatic termination of employment" I love job. Not the company.

We collect unemployment for

We collect unemployment for the weeks the school is on vacation and when school is out. You must claim "lack of work" as the reason for the claim.

Bonnie, what do you mean we

Bonnie, what do you mean we are gonna have a field with the FS hand book? It isn't a rat book, it is for reporting safety hazards, near misses and for the boss to write things in. Our boss writes good things in it once a month. We were told it isn't for us to report other drivers.

You'll still have the same management there. So even if there is a book, they may or may not use it. Depends on how it affects getting the job done.

Hi Everyone, I'm from

Hi Everyone,

I'm from Hodgkins, and I am a Union Organizing Committee Member. We on the Committee have received xerox copies of the F/S National handbook. It is surprising of how many things you can be reprimanded or teminated for, smoking on a bus, drinking coffee on a bus, eating on the bus, sleeping on the job(careful on those long charters), the list goes on for about three pages. And if that were not enough(for all of you that don't know) the dexterity test, I think we better start training lifting weights, and improving our mobility and walking speed!

In our yard, it is the same as HAPPY said...It all depends on who is on the good side of the office staff, etc.
IF you are a favorite, then rules in a handbook can be overlooked as they play the stupid act or cover up stuff....for some, the rules need not apply.

To FSdriver, My "First

To FSdriver,

My "First Student National Employee Handbook" is dated July 2007 (this date is on the cover). The paragraph from above is on page 45.

We don't have First Student

We don't have First Student Handbooks. At not from the company. (We were Laidlaw) We get revisions to the imaginary handbook for all the new crap they are feeding us. For our company it still works on the who ever is the bosses friend gets the least punishment rule. Some people get days off, some get fired, and some don't get anything.

Its not what you know, its who ya blow.

geeee- where does it tell us

geeee- where does it tell us that above reply to Donna? That info is in our National employee handbook? Please reply back, what page and where? I dont see anything about training... classroom and behind the wheel training or 30 minute discussions .... interesting....Do we all have the same First Student handbooks? Do we all have the same rules?

Good Evening all, When I saw

Good Evening all,
When I saw this entry and had recieved a phone call from a driver in the Nashua yard. I called my freind JIM AMICO, former Regional Safety Coordinator from Region 11 which covers Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont and he gave me the following information I hope it helps.

FS policy: Preventable accidents per Mr. Abbott - and FS; The person involved in a preventable accident shall be retrained within a 3 to 5 day period. Non-preventables; the manager should sit down with the employee to discuss further "prevention" ideas.
Both should be documented with employee signatures and dates.
The Mr Abbott referred to in this note is Percy Abbott former Vice President of Safety for First Group and Regional Vice President of Region 11. I am sure that some of you Laidlaw drivers know this name as he was also at one time the President of Safety for your company!!!

Donna, this is what it says

Donna, this is what it says in our "First Student National Employee Handbook". I hope this is what you were looking for.

"Drivers who are involved in a collision will be schedule for enhancement training, whether the collision is determined to be preventable or non-preventable. The training topic and skill will be directly related to the type of collision and will vary in the amount of time required. A non-preventable, for instance, may only require 30 minutes to discuss the sequence of events and to review the pertinent Smith System Key (s), whereas, a preventable may require classroom and behind-the-wheel training. The goal for either one is to improve the driver's knowledge and skill necessary to avoid a similar collision in the future. This training is not part of the disciplinary process related to a collision".
