I, Michael W. Plumtree, feel I have been strongly harassed over the last two weeks by being written up three times.

On December 28th I was written up for a safety vest violation while I was not working. I just came to pick up my check and didn’t have the vest on. I parked 3’ from the door walked in and was written up.

On January 10th I was written up for allegedly smoking to close to the building. I might add I was not told of this write up. I found out by accident, and yet it says I refused to sign it. How could I refuse to sign it when nobody told me about it in the first place? I also have witnesses that Tim Stieber, one of First Student’s Managers, stands about three to four feet from the door to smoke.

On January 11th I was written up on the yard for not taking the “bus is empty” sign out of the rear window. An employee named Diane Foster was right behind me and she was not written up though guilty of the same violation.

It is hard to follow procedure when you don’t have a company handbook stating the company rules. Plus, I am pro union and I feel I am being singled out and harassed because of my attempt to organize on the yard. Note that many people have not been written up for all of these same violations.

When I question management they simply say, "I have not seen other people in violation of the company rules".

All this harassment is making me very nervous and sick to my stomach. It is making my job a nightmare and harder to do.

I am a school bus driver and responsible for a number of children. All this harassment does not help me try to do my job with the utmost safety and efficiency.

So other people who have children in schools that we service have the right to be requested for their school, while I know I was requested, as what the teacher told me, and some one with less seniority than I gets the 3 day two night charter servicing my sons group. While I get 2 extra hours of charter time doing a Middle School charter. Boy, there is a female co-worker who's child went to a School in Central Stickney, if someone other than she got a charter from that school, the whole terminal knew she got screwed.

I'm now aware that you are and have been expressing your opinion, but it so closely resembles that which we were told by Kit Hansert back in August. So now I'm thinking they probably consulted you prior to the meeting on the tactics to be used. I knew I should'nt have given Kit Hanset as much credit as I did.

The company has effectively deprived us co-workers of our rights to a vote for or against Teamster representation at this time, but time marches on and they will face the co-workers again only in much more powerful numbers. We will bring Hodgkins terminal to an election! Workers will triumph in the end. The Teamsters never quit, never, they'll sit back and be there for all of us, when that time comes victory will be at hand. The Teamsters never lose but may strategically retreat. That's why they are so great and we will see their might, soon. Thank you Steve, Dave wray, and the rest of our co-workers in the information and mouthpiece business for speaking out on behalf of the whole terminal. You did good! The company did good, local management did good. Our co-workers lost though, unfortunately!!! only temporarily, fortunately!!!!

We just finished a meeting, I asked you along with several other people to breakfast.I was offering you a gesture of friendship. I had no intention of trying to talk you into anything. I wasn't even planning on discussing the matter unless it came up in a humorous way. You have turned an offering of the branch of friendship into a thistle of deception. I'm sorry you thought I was trying to trap you. This is the paranoia that is going on around the yard and it is un-warranted. Why would I try convince you against what I know you cannot be convinced of. To you this is not about truth and honesty or your fellow employees but about position with the company. I'll never sway you from that. We have organizers who are so in need of making a decent living that they choose extra work over organizing. This is a concerted effort by local managment and Corporate to weaken the ranks of our organizing co-workers. This is a violation of the law and F.S. neutrality policy.

This Company is shameless, so shameless it will soon disregard you too. By the way I can't remember inviting you to eat any other time. So what's this "I keep refusing" and "convince me to join", all about. Is this another exaggeration to let people think your being harrassed by organizers? You know we don't harass anyone.....that is the tactic promoted by management, condoned by Corporate and you know it all to well because of close involvement with the people who use these methods.

No one is expendable, you and I are a dime a dozen to these millionaires at Corporate and the thumb is lowering slowly down on our heads, yours and mine. You will have to convince yourself! I'm too smart to try.

When I address you on this blog it is not to change your mind, but to make corrections to the incorrect messages you keep putting out. I have to try to keep the record straight forward and honest, because you presume to speak on behalf of all your fellow co-workers, an arrogant position to take and is an insult to all workers.

People won't sign cards when they are being intimidated and coerced, especially when the indicated threat is that management will know. Our co-workers have been denied their right to learn that it is their right and even their duty as good citizens to sign a card when they want representation. The ganging up by a group of thugs intent on protecting their status of insecure positions is pretty scary especially when you may not even know who the boss is. To a lot of these poor people you are all bosses. If only they knew better. I can remember when I started. It took me months to figure out who was the bosses and who was not.

I always say, "reason can never reason with un-reason". I've learned that if I speak to a fool I become a fool.

First off they have to get the cards and nobody wants to sign them.

Next the way different people have told me what they were told concerning the meaning of the card vs what it really meant alienated those people that might have considered joining the union.

No, as a matter of fact I am a friend to all of them. If we talk about union vs non union it is on subjects that we agree on like radicals on both sides as to pros & cons of joining a union we do not talk about those items.

You say you "just cannot win", don't count yourself out because the truth has been revealed by the feeble responses to the "ask, tell or request" question. There is no harm in asking to be requested for a charter.

I suspect everyone has done it and I no of no company or terminal policy prohibiting it. If I am wrong, then it is new and you can blame First Student for the prohibition. One in many to come, more prohibitions and one sided demands are yet to come, Tune in, stand by, watch & listen because sooner or later it will come home ro roost in the un-believers own back yard. When they get touched by the National Policy rules I believe some heads will turn in our direction. We will gain full support and it is only a matter of time.

Anyone willing to mislead people and send them astray and to deprive them of what is their rights should be ashamed of themselves, company or company co-worker. This is the truth and the facts are evident, evading the truth is to deny the truth. deception lays where it lays and must be exposed at all cost, no matter the perpetrator. Truth must always come to light!

Yes,I'm sure to many people it sounds pretty childish
all this bickering back and forth.Me personally, I'm
trying to get a straight question or comment,so I can
give back a straight reply.Well I just couldn't help
myself this"cutomer conversation" started with 2 others
I just was trying to nail it down,and help out.But I
can now see now no matter what I say about it,I'm not
going to win.It's enough to know that my few statements
on the subject are correct.
I just wish all you people who are now teamsters,
{congrats by the way} could spend 1 week here and see
how bad corporate and the management has poisoned so many minds and turned co-worker against co-worker.
It is very sad when you let somone else do your thinking for you.Especially when they are only looking
out for their own best intrest.And we all know I am
talking about corporate and Hodgkins managers.
Is there such a thing of trying to give to much help?
Maybe so.After trying so long and so hard it is tough
to just give up on your co-workers who have been lied
to for so long by some co-workers,who by the way have
been supported by management.I know hard to prove, but
we all have eyes and we all are not dumb.

Maybe its just me but the closest that I'll come is to say "if you want you can ask for me". If I get another charter from the customer great if not OK.

I'm the type that takes a job and I do it to the best of my ability whether its driving routes, doing a charter or working in the office. I accept the pay rate for that job.

The union cannot threaten your job or position. The union cannot try to increase your pay unless they represent you, but the company can and has in some cases reduced pay and benefits because they can. They have a free hand, and that scares the hell out of a lot of people. Why doesn't it scare you? When it comes Carol, she will only be announcing it because she can't raise or lower anything, only Carey Paster can! He is the one with the power.

Open your eyes for crying out loud, when will you see the light? The writing is on the wall! Stop the deception! I know you don't deceive yourself, your too smart.. stop deceiving the co-worker who doesn't know what to do, or is afraid to do anything. This fear is not caused by the union! This union came here to help us and never intimidated anyone so stop the lies. Give me ne instance when you have been intimidated with fear by the union, here at Hodgkins? One... and not some crap about a Teamster walking up to someone's bus to talk to them, and not some garbage about what you heard or happened to you or a friend 30 years ago. That person is paranoid and maybe shouldn't be driving a bus in that condition, but the Teamsters would still defend her because that's what they do.

You or I can't, thats why I seek refuge in a powerful body like the Teamsters to defend me. Do you feel you could influence Carol to rehire Bob Trnka or Rita Pasch? If you can get them back I'll be the first to consider not organizing.

Steve, stop it stand up for us the workers, or at least stay out of it if you must protect your position and status with the company. Join or keep quiet, we don't want opinions that the company has started. They are liars just like Tim telling us he lugged a 40lb bag, BS, and he wasn't ashamed of it either. He didn't blush because he was trained well and figures its alright to lie if it's for the company's benefit.

I am sure he as is Carol are powerless to help us, but they do have the power to hurt us , fire us, at will anytime w/o notice or reason. Where is their help. Only Carey Past has that power and he does not give a damn.

Everybody at our terminal except for the absent Carey Paster is at will (AT RISK), even you are not infallable Steve.

It takes a man to turn around and stand for the truth, just look at St. Paul. Could you do that?

The "hang" comment was made by no rest... in a previous blog. Just so you don't misunderstand, it was not my comment. I was repeating it. By the way who would you like to hang? LOL

You know I'm always behind you and you me. All the committee is there, we are one, and we are one with all the workers, even no rest...we are workers in a big uncaring company. We are co-workers vs'ing a large international corporation. An entity without a heart or soul. A machine built to exact profits at all cost without considering the human element. The men and women who run this heartless entity hide under the umbrella of corporate freedom to act as they want. They are as heartless as is the Corporation. Kit Hansert said it best, "I am the company, I can do what I want....Etc." and you can't or else pay the price was the indication. This man is or was in the human relations dept. How IRONIC is that? Human relations for what? Certainly not the worker, he made that very clear.

See the light, Mike, myself, John, Vic, Sherri and all the OC are on your side, not the company's side. Go with us to a better place. We can create our own Human relations dept. that the company will have to listen to and be responsible to. C'mon let's go, now. It is never too late.

Thanks for the support.One correction, I never said I
wanted to hang anyone.As far as who ever no rest is

talk to me,hopefully it would intelligent conversation
between the two of us.
As far as getting mad,hell yes I get mad at times,and
i'm sure every living person in the world has got mad

Everyone,

Why do you continue to respond to someone not worthy of your time. I will agree this person has a right to express an opinion, however not when making accusations and dirty remarks against people without the b..ls to ID themselves. As said before by this person, if I think hard enough I can figure out who it is, but that The Tree wanted to hang h.. (Gender unrevealed intentionally). I know who it is, but will not give the satisfaction of revealing it to anyone. To h.. Mike Plumtree may have a bit of a temper but his temper is due to his great passion to help you and me and all of us. I work shoulder to shoulder on our Org. committee with this man and I know his heart. He is a believer, he is optimistic and hopeful, he is intelligent and caring, but for his occasional temper flareup, he's truly a gentleman. I don't know of too mny people who haven't used the F word and other distasteful language. So we care not to cast stones....

I will stand next to him any time, I am proud to be his friend and I wish I could be yours, but you have chosen to turn away from me. I harbor no grudge as I feel your not a bad person but are being fed the wrong info. I wish for you all that is good in this job, and because I do I am sad it will never be much, because you are fighting yourself. In so doing you are hurting me, Mike, John, and all of our fellow employees ! We all deserve more, please stop being so bitter and help us to help everyone have a better life.

H.. why wouldn't you want abigger piece of the pie, no one wants your office help position but I would like to see you paid what your worth for what you do. You are loyal to the company and that's not a bad thing, truly they are not loyal to you, they are buying your dis-loyalty to yourself and Mike, John and all of us. We need you with us, every single First Student employee needs you. We here at Hodgkins must lead the way, when we win here, the rest will fall like dominoes. Remember, John Dillinger? He was said to be so intelligent that if he had worked for good he would've been a great asset to the world, but he applied his talents in a narrow selfish way that cost him his life early and brought him down to the halls of infamy.

You don't have to make it so obvious if you do decide to support us, you, Mike, John, myself and all of us. Just speak the truth, don't puppet the un-truths. Carey Paster don't even know who you are, but I'll bet he has heard of me! I know he knows Sherri Henry, because she is a big pain in his a--. We should all be a big pain to that man. I know your capabilities, I've talked to you one on one. I know your smart, I also know you never back down. Don't be afraid to reveal yourself to the rest of us. No one is going to hurt you. Mike has a gentle heart, trust me I read people very well.

Join us, we all need your influence and your power, stand with us, stand for a just cause, be honest and true and you will gain so many followers it will truly amaze even you. I know you can do it and I know you have the courage, all you need is the conviction to do it.

All you need to do to get the conviction is support your fellows who need you, those who for one reason or another cannot speak for themselves, but truly desire to be free and as prosperous as they can become. Wouldn't it be nice to say you played a part in enhancing your own life as well as all of our lives.

We all of us need you and you need me, John, Mike, Sherri and all the rest of your fellow employees.
We can work miracles together, you, I and us.

I respect you for your knowledge. I also think your quite brave to come into this blog without hiding your ID. I have also, to thank you because you have given me so many oportunities to tell the truth of what is and is not happening. If not for you I may find it hard to come up with good subjects. You make it easier for me to tell everyone what is happening.

Don't tell me that any driver after hearing that from a
customer would not give the customer their name and

Or if the driver & customer never spoke & the driver saw the customer later in the week,then said how was
the charter? Oh great said the customer.Same thing ,my
name is , and ask for me again.

From what I gather Mrs. Casper was informing you of company policy, its been that way ever since I started driving for 22+ years ago, which has always been the DRIVER DOES NOT ASK a customer to request them. However the customer MAY request a driver.

post,I no longer answer "dumb posts directed at me"
I also will no longer answer no rest for any reason.
as I said before Sherri,no rest can speak to me face
to face,if this person, who ever it is, has the guts.
I doubt it.For the record If I can't spell it,I use a
dictionary,If I don't know the answer,I ask questions.
I don't type so well so I practice.In other words I
keep trying to better myself.

Yes, there is others who have been singled out for other reasons, my self I was told that I cannot talk to any of our customers, including the High School that my oldest son graduated from and my youngest son now attends. I am a member of the PTO and a part of the theater association of Morton High School in Berwyn, Illinois. I own a home with my wife in Berwyn, pay realestate taxes, and vote in Berwyn. I was told by our Manager that she doen't care what I am a member of, I have no right to talk to them about me getting some extra work from them. I'm sorry, but I have the right to talk to my School District's, it is not correct for our employer or their representatives to control our right of speech, nor any of our civil or constitutional rights. Maybe our management should try to improve on matters within our terminal, making sure that charters are actually given out by rotation, and requests are actualy given to those requeted. Improving communication problems with the radio's, some people seem to have no problem, others seem to get no response most of the time. Maybe if they would move some of the radios in the buses, to where they can be seen and monitored easier, not by our knee's and thighs.

no rest for the wicked: I agree that the smell of smoke can and does affect people. I don't like the smell and complain when our mechanics get on to start the buses and have a cigarette in their hands. We have a smoking ban also. But smoking a few feet from a building and smoking in a bus are two different things. If you are talking about smoking outside, then there should be no smoke smell in the bus other than the driver or child who smokes or their parents smoke and the smell follows them.
Also your reference to a cop catching one person at a time. Funny how "the cop" sometimes chases only one person constantly and are blind to the others.
Everyone should be given the time of day. Everyone deserves a chance to be treated equal first before they get kicked to the curb.
Laidlaw had rules to go by also. Did they write people up for infractions before? I bet that now you are First Student they use those new rules to write people up. Is is possible it's because you are talking union? That usually is the answer.

plumtree why don't you tell the whole story you were not the only one written up for not having your safety vest on. it is a rule working or non working you are to have the vest on when on property.when they asked you to sign the write up you said F*** you and walked out instead of being a man about it. do you think that was professional? as for the bus is empty sign its like a cop can only catch one speeder at a time you just got caught.no one likes you enough too even pay you the time of day.follow the rules its that simple you read to much to much in to it

Mike if you are having an issue with your bus, and it is a safety issue then it should be put down. If you have written it up and been told that it is only an "Idiot Light" then I would ask the mechanic that says it is an idiot light to sign off on your paperwork. By doing this he would be stating that your bus is safe to drive. I'm not sure what type of paperwork you file for the DOT but I am sure that you must have to have copies of it. Or a book on your bus at all times? Here we have a copy for the garage, a copy for ourselves and a copy that stays on the bus for a full month after we start a new book. Therefore if there is an issue with your bus and the mechanic signs off and says that it is ok I would suggest that you take a copy and save if for your files.

Mr. Plumtree, just a little info on your little light problem you keep bitching so much about it is also referred to as an idiot light its has nothing to do with your brakes failing it is just the anti-lock braking system(ABS) sensors that with as wide open space that is around the tire area that if just hit a bump or pothole it jars the sensor and it is likly to pop on and stay on until you shut down the bus and let it sit and somtimes it will just go off on its own. There is nothing on these or any vehicle that will tell you that your brakes are going to go out until they go and the pedal goes to the floor. Just wanted to toss that out there to you and i hope you don't take any offense to me doing so.

harassment and lies to me{Michael Plumtree}.
The machanic was checking my bus for a ongoing problem
{I was talking to Fran Clark at the time} The mechanic comes into her office with a handfull of "TREE" air
fresheners{little tree with a string 5"tall}took them
out of my bus and the mechanic and Fran said "you MIKE
PLUMTREE can't keep these in the bus because the bus won't pass the saftey inspection" I don't know it passed in Oct.07 with them in the bus.

Now as for the ongoing problem with the bus I drive in
question with in the last 5 working days I written 14
D O T SHEETS 9 ON THE BUS IN QUESTION AND 5 ON ALL THE
OTHER BUSES I HAVE HAD TO DRIVE... In 1 day in the A M
they gave me a bus to drive and of course you must DOT IT THEN IN THE DAY IN THE AFTERNOON I GET ANOTHER BUS
GUESS WHAT ANOTHER DOT SHEET.I SAID WELL GIVE THE OTHER
DRIVER THE OTHER BUS AND LET ME DRIVE THE BUS I DROVE IN THE A.M. THE COMMENT FROM THE COMPANY WAS "WELL THE DRIVERS LIKE TO DRIVE THE BUSES THAY THEY ARE USE TO
DRIVING"I THOUGHT TO MYSELF "WHAT AM I CHOPPED LIVER"

First of all let me thankyou both very much for your
comments and support.I would like you both to know and
everyone out there to know I have not seen this much support since I was in the Marine Corps{I won't say how
lond ago it was}.Oh hell 1971 ok.I think the Teamsters
will help American workers get back to where they
should be,STRONG AGAIN.. Support is the key issue..
People can sign cards all day but if the support isn't there {as a very good friend told me} it's like spitting
in the wind..What the Teamsters did for me after my
father died I'll never forget.They were faster than the
insurance company,and I might add the last to know about
it.{my dads death}.WE have a few people on the Hodgkins
yard that said the Union screwed them but when you ask
them to explain they can't. Many Hodgkins workers have
got their pensions and just don't care about others
who don't have one or would like one.Many people are
plain afraid of management,why I don't know.They still
see I have a job even with all the harassment.If they
would just take a stand they would not have to worry
about it any more{company abuse}.They should know there
is such a thing as silent support.{Personally I don't}

I agree Mr. Plumtree. You are definitely being singled out. We are teamsters for 10 years. We have a contract to live by. When Laidlaw was bought out by First we didn't change much because we have a bargaining agreement. Safety vest-we have had several people forget theirs, no one has been disciplined.
Smoking too close to the building. The head of our area smokes when he is around on the back porch/deck of our building. No smoking in the building but can smoke on the grounds.
Bus is Empty: We have all driven around with those "pink irritating signs" in our window. We have also forgotten to put them in. Still no discipline. I guess we all need time to put into practice little things.
I would say funny how you are the only one. Ask if anyone else in the yard has been disciplined. Tell them to watch out it could happen to them.
It's just management pushing rules onto certain people to say I am management and you are at will and I can ship you out of here in a moments notice. You have to ask how many drivers can they spare by firing before they cannot fullfill their contracts.
