Working Together to Drive Up Standards

Around the country, school bus workers are joining together and working to make real improvements in our jobs and our lives. We are standing up for good jobs and safe, reliable school bus services in our communities. We are making sure we have a voice at work, we are bargaining as equals with our employers, and we are working to ensure that we are all treated fairly and with respect. School Bus Workers United & Drive Up Standards is being conducted by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

The Teamsters represent more than 38,000 school bus workers in the private and public sectors. We are tapping our real-world knowledge of the issues and concerns that we face in the workplace, as well as our international experience in making changes for the better. We are building the strength to raise standards across the school bus industry.

Blog Feature Story: Boise Mayor Sends Letter of Support to First Student Workers

As School Bus and Transit Workers organize a union for better wages, work rules and affordable health care, it is critical to realize that their are a lot of people (and important people) behind us. Besides the fact that there are 1.4 million-plus Teamsters rooting for us to get to the point of having a strong Teamster contract, there are also politicians who recognize and support our efforts.

A few days ago a letter was sent from the Mayor of Boise, Idaho to all of us in that area working with the International and Local Union 483.

You can see the whole letter by clicking here, however, I want to point out his second and third paragraphs:

"I support the right of all people to pursue better wages and working conditions.

School buses transport the most precious cargo, our children, and drivers who ensure that our children get a safe ride to an from school deserve the best."

This, my friends, is what it is all about ... we are professionals who need to gain the respect and voice at work we deserve -- and we will do it, yard by yard!
