Exeter N.H. First Student

Friday, February 27, 2009

This is for the Exeter First Student drivers most of you have the web addresses.  hopefully some of you have logged on and are sharing the information you have come accross.  This is a great way to talk to bus drivers all accross America about what they have  in their contracts this campaign is all about the Exeter drivers not the management not the teamsters  The drivers are the ones in control for a change and it is long over due  Talk to your co-workers about what you  are learning and what is available Things like affordable health care that actually covers medical needs with low co-pays Bus drivers are responsible for our children every day we trust them with our babies how can this not be an important job?????? That  should be taken seriously and we should be treated with respect  not like we are all lucky to have this job  Not too many parents out there would just put their child in another persons vehicle and say bye bye have a nice day not knowing the driver.  That is why I drove a bus I would not let my kids get into any vehicle driven by a stranger and I am sure that is why most of the bus drivers out there are driving We are not lucky to have this job THEY ARE LUCKY TO HAVE US IN THAT DRIVERS SEAT AND IT IS ABOUT TIME THEY REALIZE IT  DON'T YOU THINK SO??????

Some of the people at our

Some of the people at our location are complaining that on the route they get their normal wage, but when they have to attend a meeting they are only getting 8.50 an hour. This lower wage also applies when they have to go take a drug test.

Hey Dupageflute are you

Hey Dupageflute are you teamsters?

Our location just voted

Our location just voted Teamsters in the begining of March. We are working on getting everything together to go and try to negotiate to get a contract.

This is such a great

This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free. It is the old what goes around comes around routine.

Hello,  this is my first

Hello,  this is my first time commenting on here.  I just had some thoughts and numbers to give everyone.  First of all I think in everyone of these comments I keep seeing the words "Get The Facts"  Or  "Get Informed".  What does that even mean becuase I am not seeing any facts or anything to back any comments made by either side.  I would love to see actual scenarios were people have gotten wage increases and scenarios were people have gotten wage decreases.

Oh, and I was just running some numbers through my head and wanted to share with all the people that think first student is a muti-billion dollar company and makes so much money.

Here is what I did to show how much First student is paying in just Driver Wages in one year.

I am using Exeter Pay for the example.

First off I started with 15.50 Dollars as an average hourly wage at the Exeter Location.  I multiply that by and Average of 30 hours a week.  That makes 465 Dollars a week.

Now there is 180 school days in the calendar for Exeter High School in the 08-09 School year.  I divided 180 by 5 (5 Days of driving a week)  That comes out to be 36 or 36 weeks of actual driving weeks.

Now if you multiply 450 dollars a week by 36 weeks you get 16,740 Dollars of pay on average a school year for the Exeter Drivers.

Now First Student America employs 61,000 Drivers, just driver.

Now take that 61,000 and multiply that by the average of 16,740 Dollars a school year.

1,021,140,000 Dollars,  That is the number that First Student pays FOR JUST ITS Drivers.  Yes that is a Billion dollars.  Now I know that this is an extreme average but I believe it is pretty close.

Now take in the acount of the mechanics, the office help, the properties they own, the busses, the maintance, and anything elese I am missing.

I just wanted to run some numbers so that before people go saying that maybe they have a bunch of money and they can AFFORD to pay us more, that maybe they cant.

Thank You For Your Time

If you are a First Student Driver, look over the whole website, look through all of the links. The blog area, is not the only place to learn on whats going on and where. Trully educate your self let me quote a very famous man who faught for the rights of all races.

"History is a great teacher. Now everyone knows that the labor movement did not diminish the strength of the nation but enlarged it. By raising the living standards of millions, labor miraculously created a market for industry and lifted the whole nation to undreamed of levels of production. Those who attack labor forget these simple truths, but history remembers them."

Sorry.....your figure's are very high. I would venture to guess that based on the numbers reported on this board that Gator Girl's location is probably at the top of the scale at $20 plus if I remember correctly. I am sure she will give us a more accurate number. And that is with a contract. I can only imagine the lowest point without one. In Cologne we go from 12 to 17. Very few are at 17. And they had to work 30 plus years to get there! Trip rate is $1.50 less than route rate. And I believe it tops out under $14. We have yet to ratify our first. That is a whole 'nother story I won't go into right now.

I believe an average of $15 would on the high side for our location and nationally. So if you figure on 4.5hrs x $15 x 180days x 61,000drivers = $741,150,000. A lot of locations are so small that they have hardly any staff beyond drivers. With the other payroll and expenses it may very well come to a billion. But with a net profit in the area of 1.5 billion is that really so bad? Last year killed the profits from the previous year but everybody is in the same boat. At least they have the means to compensate for that where as.... we do not.

Zonar audits have cut most drivers hours down to the minimum 4 hours per day. Yes, Zonar is used to time you and they may re-audit at any time. Be sure to keep that in mind when you log in and out .Be sure you don't do anything until you log in and never ever log out until you have completed all of your duties.

Well we are on Long Island

Well we are on Long Island and it is expensive to live here that is why we make so much. We are at $21.59 now and will be at $22.12 in September. 6 hour guarantee. Same pay for charters unless they go to the city then it is time and a half. Our Local is the best and has fought very hard to get us what we have.

Ok, And who wrote this ??

Ok, And who wrote this ?? Sounds like someone on the financial end of the company. HMMMM

Not only do many drivers NOT

Not only do many drivers NOT make that much money per hour but most only work 20 or less hours per week....so those numbers that you ran were very over inflated. There are 17,000 bus drivers that have organized so far that can tell you First Student has had no problem giving them the wages and benefits that they deserved all along. The same ones that we all deserve.

What if you are a charter

What if you are a charter driver during the slow season and you only work one day out of the month.  Wouldn't they be paying out more in dues than they would bring home?  Do they still have the option of insurance? Their pay is so unpreditable.

They would also get the

They would also get the monthly safety and attendance bonus which would cover the dues. If you don't work at all in a month you take a withdrawrel card from the union and pay no dues for that month.

Charter drivers would still

Charter drivers would still be liable for dues no matter how much time is worked.  This is their choice to be a charter driver.  When it is slow it usually doesn't last as long as a month.  Also regarding the insurance we all have our insurance figured out to be paid over our days worked 36 weeks or something to that effect.  Therefore insurance would be deducted monthly in the months that we work.

Charter drivers are needed on a regular basis to do sport trips etc.  I think that some drivers do charters as a regular job and some use it as a second job where they notify the terminals which days they are available.  There are also charter drivers that are willing to cover routes when it is slow pickings for charters.  If they are really interested in keeping the job it can work.

You'll probably have to find a conversion site for pounds to american dollars though.  Happy Hunting!

We make $21.59 here and I

We make $21.59 here and I can tell you FS charges the district $68,000 per bus multiply that by how many busses you have and it is in the MILLIONS.

There are alot of drivers

There are alot of drivers out there that don't make anywhere near that amount of money per hour. Exeter is at the top of the pay scale.

Good Morning Everyone.  I

Good Morning Everyone.

I hope alot of your concerns were addressed yesterday.  I thought of a couple of things that I would like to add my two cents to.

Regarding the questions about contracts with the school district.  During my three contracts, never has their been an issue with the district about "drivers" in these contracts.  The agreements are made between the company and the district.  I watch our school district minutes online.  They did at one point mention bidding it out, but discussed it and said they were happy with the service.  In NH it is my understanding that they don't have to bid.  If the district is happy with the service then why go elsewhere?   This brings up a point that if the company can keep driver's happy that will work with them to make their customer happy, then the company will be happy because they will continue to get the contracts.  Simple huh?

Regarding insurance.  I have paid $15 to date for most of my tests related to a physical.  Nothing more.  I have also paid $80 for an eye exam and two pairs of glasses.  I paid a little more for anti glare lenses which I asked for.  Other drivers have paid less.

Another thing that I would like to run past all.  A driver in another terminal called me to ask me about a bus that was being used because they had no others right now and it has issues with speedometer/odometer etc.Why should we have to drive defective equipment?  Shouldn't management go to upper management to ask for better equipment for us?  Shouldn't upper management be supplying this equipment to make their customer happy and fulfill their contract?  PS don't let them make you believe that it's because of raises that they can't meet the needs.   They need to stop "flushing" problems and hope they won't come back.  If a problem does arise because of defective equipment they will start at the bottom to point fingers.

I have a question for all zonar users.  Do you ever get a print out when you write up a bus?  How does this work compared to a vir book?

We have a very important job.  Do Not ever let anyone tell you different.  Go to the Dept of Safety and pull up the saf-c laws 1300.

Regarding the comment made about people speeding.  I agree we don't want people speeding around.

I have to say after all these years that I know that management and I work well together.  I'd like to think that we have gone the distance and can work things out together for the good of all.  If people do make mistakes they are rectified in the interest of all.  These days if one person is doing something, all are not "blamed" so to speak in a newsletter.  Usually that one person is spoken to.

Sorry I am so winded but my mind runs a mile a minute when I leave meetings thinking I wish that someone had asked me this or that.

Hope this addresses some of your concerns from a driver/steward's point of view.  Have a great day!  Enjoy.

Donna Salem

PS.  Just want you to know

PS.  Just want you to know also that once we had a meeting with the superintendant about an issue.  At that meeting we (I) was pointing out the large job responsibility we have.

The superintendant said "It's not my fault that Laidlaw doesn't pay you more."

I hope everyone remembers to

I hope everyone remembers to come to the union meeting Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the American Legion across from Telly's on 125 in Epping. We all need to show our support and see how our campaign is progressing. Even if you've signed a card your presence is needed. If you have questions or concerns make sure you come and get them answered or addressed. Lets all make an informed decision....not based on the rumors that have been circulating.

It seems to have quieted

It seems to have quieted down just a little bit.  I hope all of your questions and concerns are being answered.

Judging by the replies on the web you have support if you need it.

Not all people will see immediately what the union can do for them.  Ask the people who know.

Hope all of you will attend the Saturday meeting to get informed.  If you don't want to ask the question in front of others ask someone to speak to you one on one.

Good Luck Everyone.

Donna

It's times like this that

It's times like this that make me realize why bus drivers don't always get the respect that they deserve. When a fellow bus driver drives by the teamsters who are out showing their support and they get flipped off by this driver. That was a real mature thing to do. Were you showing us your I.Q.?

  TO ALL YOU PEOPLE THAT

TO ALL YOU PEOPLE THAT LOVE YOUR JOB DRIVING A SCHOOL BUS FOR THAT TOWNS YOU DRIVE HERES A LITTLE BIT OF INFO THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW...

1. YOU READ THIS FLYER HANDED TO YOU AND TODAYS SAFETY MEETING THAT SAID THAT YOU WILL LOOSE YOU ROUTE BECAUSE IT DONE ALL ON HOW LONG YOU BEEN WITH THE COMPANY THAT IS BULL.

2. ON YOU PEOPLE THAT ARE SAYING THAT ONLY CERTAIN PEOPLE WHERE NOTIFIED OF A MEETING THAT IS ALSO BULL BECAUSE AT THE DECEMBER SAFETY MEETING MYSELF AND ALONG WITH OTHER DRIVERS HANDED OUT FLYIER INVITING ALL AND I MEAN ALL OF THE DRIVES TO THE FIRST MEETING IN EPPING. IT WAS YOUR CHOICE NOT TO TAKE A FLYER.

3. YOU WILL NOT TAKE A CUT IN PAY BECAUSE DURING A NEGOTIATIONS FOR A CONTRACT IF WE DONT LIKE WHAT THEY SAY WE DONT HAVE TO TAKE IT.   AND NO ONE STARTS OUT AT ZERO, EVERYONE IS AT WHAT THEY ARE NOW FOR PAY RATE WEATHER YOU DRIVE IN SAU 16 OR IN CHESTER.

AND THATS JUST A FEW

AND ON ANOTHER NOTE IF YOU PEOPLE WANT TO KEEP YOU JOB AND GET A BETTER HEATH CARE AND BENEFITS LIKE THAT THAN YOU SHOULD REALLY THINK ABOUT THE CHOICE YOU MAKE.

LET ME ASK YOU SOMETHING AND THIS TO THE NAY SAYERS OUT THERE.  WHEN YOU GO IN AND GET FUEL OR DO A CHARTER IN ANOTHER DISTICT WOULDN'T YOU LIKE TO GET PAY THE HIRE RATE IN STED OF THEM CHEETING YOU OUT OF MONEY THAT YOU EARNED???????

PERSONALY I WOULD LIKE TO GET THE HIRE RATE CAUSE I AM A SINGLE DAD AND COULD USE THE MONEY AND NOT GET STIFFED OUT OF A COUPLE OF DOLLARS THAT THIS MULTI-BILLON DOLLAR COMPANY CAN AFORED. AND ANOTHER THING IS WHAT IF YOU WHENT TO THE MANAGER AND SAID "HEY I WOULD LIKE TO GET PAID FOR A HOLIDAY." WHAT DO YOU THINK SHE WOULD SAY " NO WE DONT GET PAID HOLIDAYS." AND WHAT IF YOU WERE SICK AND HAD TO MISS A DAY WOULDNT YOU LIKE TO GET PAID FOR THAT BECUASE I NO I WOULD LIKE THAT. THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW DAY THIS WINTER THAT I WAS REALLY SICK AND NEED A DAY THE GET BETTER BUT I COULDNT CUASE I CANT A FORED A DAY OUT OF WORK.

ANOTHER THING IS AND WE ALL KNOW HOW WELL THESE SPARE BUSES ARE THAT THEY GIVE YOU WHEN SOMETHING BRAKES OR YOURS HAVE TO GET A PM DONE ON IT. HAVE THE TIME I DONT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THOSE BECUASE I HAVE DRIVEN JUNK CARS THAT ARE SAFER. THE BRAKE DOWN MORE THAN OUR OWN BUSES AND HAVE THE TIME IT LIKE RIDING ON A PARK BENCH GOING DOWN A DIRT ROAD A 65 MILES PER HOUR. AND JUST ONE MORE THING AND I MEAN ONE MORE THING   IF YOU WANT TO GET THE RIGHT INFOMATION AND NOT THIS GARBAGE THAT BETTE HANDED OUT TO DAY CONTACT A UNION REP CAUSE I KNOW THAT I HAVE BEEN INFOMED FROM DAY ONE.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.. NO WAIT I HAVE A VOICE WHEN I WHENT TEAMSTERS.

AND PS IF YOU WANT A RESPECT AND TO HAVE A VOICE AND WHAT YOU GET FOR BENNIES VOTE YES FOR THAT UNION AND YOU VOICE WILL BE HERD.

P.P.S I NOW I WOULD LIKE THE CORPRATE THUMB THAT THEY HAVE ON US TO BE LIFTED OF MY HEAD CUASE IM STARTING TO GET BACK PROBLEMS FROM ALL THIS WAIT THEY PUT ON US. WONDERING IF I WORKED ENOUGH THIS WEEK TO PAY MY RENT AND OTHER ASORMENT OF BILLS.

THANK YOU AGAIN FROM A CONCERNED EXETER DRIVER.

 im just speaking my

im just speaking my thoughts...and maybe im more comfortabel not leaving my name with all the snapy comments people have to  say.and i didnt put words in any ones mouth i just wrote my thoughts i didnt mention anyone elses names or thoughts so i dont know were you got that from!!!!!!! i did look up info and spoke to some outher people in the union...im not knockin anyone for wanting to join the union or being rude to them. everyone has there own opinion!! i have just heard more bad then good...im was open minded and gave it a chance and heard what the union had to say...im sorry i was just not impressed. it really does not do anything for me i look out for myself!!!! i respect people and there decisions  and dont talk down to them for what they feel is right...and i never influnced anyones decision i might  talk about my own opion and ask questions but i dont make anyone feel like a jerk if there opion is diffrent then mine. if your for or agsint the union i still treat people with kindness and respect as you should for me..this whole union thing has put a damper on everyone and caused friction between people..everyone has a right to there opion without being ridaculed or talked about behind there back....for the decision they have made....come on to sit and print out peoples opions and squack about it is just a little elementry!!!!!

Here is the thing. If it is

Here is the thing. If it is all so wonderful and is going to benefit everyone, why do they feel the need to harrass you? I got the info that I wanted and was perfectly content with that. Then I had a union rep show up at my house looking for another driver. I gave her directions to the other drivers home. She asked if I worked for Exeter location. I replied yes but I was not in need of any info. She proceeded to continue asking me questions and trying to have me let her in or make a meeting with her. I again told her that I was not interested. she still continued. I told her again that I was not interested. She still continued so I asked her to leave. At that point I suppose I was a little less than polite. Now how would you feel if the person that wanted to "inform" you then went and told others that you were rude and nasty and told her to get off your property? Not so good huh? yeah that was my thought. All of you know me and know that I am far from a nasty person. Now this is the only comment I will post here so if you want to know my thoughts or if I said something ASK ME!@! I have no problem letting you know!!!!

Hi Joann, My Name is Roger

Hi Joann,

My Name is Roger Travers I"am a Organizer for the Teamsters Union,I was happy to read that you will be present at Your Union Organizing Meeting on Saturday March 21, 2009 AT 10:00 A.M. to get your questions answered by a Teamster rep.

I never heard that you were

I never heard that you were nasty or threw the union rep off your property. I am wondering what kind of information you got and who you got it from. I've been to every union meeting and I never saw you there. The only information we handed out at safety meetings was when and where a union meeting was to be held. I'm sorry if you felt harassed but sometimes it seems that anyone not in favor of the union doesn't even want to discuss it. We are willing to hear every concern and only want people to make up their minds whether it be pro or anti after they've been given the correct information. This is still America and everyone has the right to choose.

To whom ever this woman on a

To whom ever this woman on a mission is if your on a mission and are so proud of your views on the union why wouldn't you let people know who you are we have all let everyone know who we are are embrassed to let us know who you are? some of us already think we know who you are so why don't you let us know.... thanks

woman on a mission have you

woman on a mission have you ever tried to discuss an issue with first student? it goes in one ear and out the other. I've seen it 1st hand that's good you love your job no one ever said they didn't love there job and i would appreciate u not putting words in my mouth. we just want more, more that we deserve. what if you worked for a company that got paid more and you got paid less and you did all the work. you can't tell  me you wouldn't want more. people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks another words if your not properly informed you shouldn't be telling everyone the wrong info. alot of jobs that are part time you can get health benefits but you would have to pay for. if you have the whole middle of the day that's great but there are other drivers who choose not to or they can't afford to. WE CAN'T GET A PAY CUT!!! I've been informed and have been told by others I don't even know how good the union is.... one person told me " WOW the Teamsters, you guys will have it made when they get in there".

REPRESENTATION is not cheap your dues will be well spent trust me I will give you some websites to check out but first everyone should attend the next meeting to GET INFORMED

all i want to say is get

all i want to say is get your facts!!!! why pay the union to run our business we shouldnt have to do that we are all mature adults and the problems we have at work should be discussed with first student.insted of everyone bitching behind managments back...we should come foward with our problems and discuss them..i love were i work !!!!!! i have a great time being a bus driver and who ever compared us to trash workers shame on you i have never felt that way or never had anyone compare me to one..we get great pay and a great bonus now..what is everyones problem??? what is the union going to do for us???that we dont alreaty have...benefits ??? we work part time 3 maybe 4 hours a day we made that dission going into a part time job. not having health insurance. were else can you get bennifits part time..we are lucky to have a job were we get to work 2 hours and get the  whole middle of the day off and go back for 2 more..and make the amount of money we are making.and people are fighting for senority witch is not fair for people who have not been there that long but who are responsibel and never called in sick and deserve extra time....just take the time before you decide get all your facts  just look online you will find some instresting facts...union makes it seem so glorafied but its not.and also we can get a pay cut did they tell you that?????we make the most out of the school districts and the outher locations make less so we will have to meet down the middel and there pay will go up and ours will go down to make it fair!!!!!!once we are union they control us and our pay!!! and what do they do with all the money we pay them???? i asked at a metting and i never got a answer..so what does that tell you....please be seceroius and get the facts beforeyou vote know what you are voting about

Just because we work part

Just because we work part time doesn't mean we aren't entitled to some benefits. I like my job too. I've enjoyed watching how the kids change from year to year. I'm sure that some of the first students I brought to school in Kindergarten are now sending their children to school. This is not about the management. I think this is the point some people are missing. This is about a company that can well afford to treat their employees better. They are spending millions on Zonar. Paper books aren't good enough I guess. Is Zonar going to make people do better pre trips? I think not. I really don't feel "lucky" to have my job. I think they are lucky to have me. Over 20 years of collision free driving and never having to cover my run is pretty good for them.On time every day.....unless the bus breaks down. I'm proud of my record....I've worked hard to get it. I think my parents are happy to have me too. They see the same face every day. I know all their children by name. I know their habits. I know if something is not right at a stop....missing parent, sibling etc. I don't feel like I'm just a bus driver. I don't see what's wrong with wanting to make this a better job in the future. I happen to be one of those with seniority that never calls in sick. I see nothing wrong with wanting more for all the responsibility we have. We are constantly learning in this job. It's alot different now then when I started. If we are doing more shouldn't we be paid more. As far as being compared to people who pick up trash...you missed the point. We have alot more at stake then they do. If they have a collision there might be a mess to clean up but if we have a collision many children could get hurt or killed. Maybe you should come to the meeting on Saturday. One other thing....you won't make less money per hour. Please get all the right information.

 i didnt say we dont

i didnt say we dont deserve benninfits i said going into this job we knew there were not good ones avaible!!! if we work part time.and we are lucky to have this job we can bring our children. were else can you bring children to work??? and not have to pay extra or leave them in the care of outher people!!!!!we can work and raise our children ourselves..and yes if you have a great attendence at work they are lucky to have you!!!!!!! theres not many people like you who have great attendence so i give you props thats  great!!!!!!!! and i have gone to mettings and i keep getting mixed messages...im on here reading what everyone has to say and learning new things. i thought this is what it was for. and  not to down eachouther for what they think  .  im taking into  concideration what everyons has to say ....this is all new to me and this decision affects my my future as well as yours thats why im taking the time to read this and see outher peoples point of  views..

I'm sorry that you feel

I'm sorry that you feel people are downing you because you give an opinion. That is all we are doing also. As for being able to bring your children to work with you....that's only after they turn a year old. So in the first year of their life we either don't work or put them in childcare.

 i didnt say we dont

i didnt say we dont deserve benninfits i said going into this job we knew there were not good ones avaible!!! if we work part time.and we are lucky to have this job we can bring our children. were else can you bring children to work??? and not have to pay extra or leave them in the care of outher people!!!!!we can work and raise our children ourselves..and yes if you have a great attendence at work they are lucky to have you!!!!!!! theres not many people like you who have great attendence so i give you props thats  great!!!!!!!! and i have gone to mettings and i keep getting mixed messages...im on here reading what everyone has to say and learning new things. i thought this is what it was for. and  not to down eachouther for what they think  .  im taking into  concideration what everyons has to say ....this is all new to me and this decision affects my my future as well as yours thats why im taking the time to read this and see outher peoples point of  views..

hay womenonamission2 Do you

hay womenonamission2

Do you pay taxes in Exeter?  Take a good look at the town report look and see what the town workers are making. Look at the school look at there budget they are all making real good money and benninfits the firefighters only work 2 days a week and they can go to bed after 9pm and sleep... Teachers work 180 days a year and 10 of them make over $100,000 a year with benninfits, you know what  there all union. That is why you need the union because if you go to the company by yourself they are going to tell you if you dont like here hit the road.................

How sad for you " all I

How sad for you " all I want to say ", That you are happy with a company that at there will can and will take away what little you have to meet there own needs , this company will throw you under the bus in a heart beat quicker than you can say" all I want to say"to meet there own needs . I have been with laidlaw for app. 8 years and the last 1 1/2 with 1st student and I can tell you for a fact , that the TEAMSTERS have made me more secure in my job than I have ever been in my entire life,  in just a short 6 months they have saved 3 jobs, one of which was an avid anti union man ,until they threw him under the bus , the union stepped in and got him pay while on suspension for 6 mo., thats right ! until the matter was righted, we now have recourse , something we never had before, giving  us support in all our   dealings with 1st student . I tried to talk about unfairness in the work place for 10 years ,to no avail , within 2 hours of a vote to have a union ,I had made a deal with the manager , that would never have happened if the union had not been there,The union will never concede to less money, I dont know were you get your info but Salem at the end of this contract will be getting 19.00 an hour, at the end of ours we will be getting 17.65 , up 6.00 ,the union is there for us 24/7 , there whole purpose is to cover your backs ,  Our insurance  after 5 years with the company  went from 120.00 a week to 77.00 a month , no thats not a misprint , a month. No more good old boy favoritism , No more radio traffic , hey Joe give me a call when you get home , we all know what that call is , They have someone  in dispatch thats going to give him or her a trip . As far as seniority goes , you would find that senority is on a rotating basis , everybody is equal . Trip drivers as well .Route drivers sometimes want to stay in there routes , you TEAMSTERS  would vote as to what you wanted,  to keep old routes,  or have a bid day at the fall meeting ,  you would bid on the route you wanted by seniority. Pal get your facts straight , I can honestly say that I personally would pay my dues if they did nothing but watch my back from 1st student I hope you will see the light , but if you dont , well there are  always other jobs . You should be happy in life , so make the most . VOTE TEAMSTERS

Well woman I am glad to hear

Well woman I am glad to hear that your happy with what you have now so why not put it in writing? A legal binding contract that makes sure that you get to keep all that you have now. Because without a contract it can be snatched away tomorrow.

There is nothing that says that FS has to keep giving you that bonus again here today gone tommrow and there is nothing you can do about it without a contract.

Just because you work part time doesn't mean that you shouldn't have health insurance, why wouldn't you want that for yourself? If you got a chance at AFFORDABLE health care wouldn't that make you feel even more appreciated?

Make no mistake FS is lucky to have you and other driver's that really love what they do, your job is not easy and not everyone can do it. You know that you have to go through alot of training to become a bus driver and it takes a special person to stick with it.

Seniority is a very important part of a contract because some day your going to be the one that needs that protection. Let's just suppose that all of a sudden a new driver comes in and they are making more hours then you and making more money, which has happened all too much. How would you feel? Appreciated? I don't think so, Valued? no again. The point is that you should have been asked first if you wanted the extra work and why would you be happy about someone coming in after you and making more money?

Next I would like to address that the "union" does not control anything! You and your coworkers are the Union and all decision are made by majority vote. The contract is something that is voted on by you and your co workers, why would you vote to make less money? You wouldn't, if all these could have been settled by you going in to managment, then why haven't they been, I'll tell you and I already said it once, your an at will employee and FS can give and take away anything they see fit because you have nothing in writing.

So I encourage all of you to talk to a teamster organizer and get your questons answered and make an informed decision that is going to help you and your family

Women on a mission you

Women on a mission you should talk to other drivers in locations that are already union. I totally agree with your opinion about the number of hours we work. There may come a day as it has for me that you may need to use the health benefits. After 20 years of being taken care of financially and medically circumstances may change. I like the feeling that if I need it it is there and will not take my whole pay check.  Compare teamsters health benefits  to first student insurance it is much different. You as the drivers make up your contract you put forward what it is you guys want changed. The union does not control you. Gather more facts ask to see other terminals contracts. As far as pay cuts why would you agree to that, it all comes down to what you want. Don't exhaust yourself with the negative stuff truthfully it has become  more positive   because it is all in writing.

I have to say that everyone

I have to say that everyone should get the facts just like you say.  Go talk to people and get the correct information.

Some people probably have gone to management and discussed their issues only to be told this is the way it is Sorry.  No matter how long we complained about issues at our terminal nothing ever got done that was good for the people.  It was only good for the management.

Great pay is a plus.  Great bonuses are a plus.  Did you ever ask anyone else if they feel this way about their pay or bonus?  Maybe everyone is not getting treated fairly.  Try this: walk up to someone that you are not usually friendly with.  Ask straight up front how much they make an hour.  See if you are comparable to each other.  See if you even get an answer.  Some people tend to hide what they earn per hour.  I have had conversations with people and find out that because they had experience or made their demands about their pay they got what they wanted.

Benefits:  You can have a part time job and get benefits.  First Student offers insurance.  They kept the insurance the same for the drivers and made management take a different insurance.  The price is still high.  Teamsters offered a good plan with a quarter of the price for a driver.  In these times of economic uncertainty,  having  affordable insurance is a big plus.

People also can get enough work at this job to be able to make a decent paycheck.  Working or not working mid day is a choice if there is work available.  Most people take this job so they bring their kids with them or they are retired.  Some people once their children are grown up stay because they love the job.  Earning more that four hours pay per day is not out of reach for some people if they want.

Seniority does count for something.  Some people have worked for years doing this job.  I know from experience that people have "told sob stories" about how they need the extra work, and have received preferencial treatment over others.   Everyone has bills.  Everyone needs a paycheck.  Hanging around work, being buddies with the boss should not take preference over other people who also work at a terminal.  What's fair is fair for all.  Everyone should be treated with respect and fairness when it comes to extra work being available.

I worked every single day, sick if necessary, with sick children on board years ago and was told I couldn't get my end of the year bonus because I took off a couple of days for my Dad's funeral.   I was told my hands are tied.  Nice.  How's that for respect for someone who gave it their all.

No one I repeat no one gets a pay cut if there is a contract negotiated.  No one in their right mind agrees to a pay cut.

Unions work for the worker.  Just like union busters work and get paid by big business.  A union is a business run for the working people.  They defend all, not only during working hours but also through political bills that could change the working conditions of everyone.   Maybe people should get more involved with how the federal and state changes laws constantly for your license requirement.  Once you get involved with issues you can see that getting behind the wheel and driving is not the only piece of your position.  We carry very valuable cargo.  Our jobs should be one of the most respected positions ever.

It's a long process..there

It's a long process..there are still people we are tring to talk with.  As far as flyers yes  I was there the day they gave me one and not you. That was before. I had no control with that. However since then things have changed. Even though they didn't give you one I did share with you about the mtgs.  Remember it's a personal choice get the facts and deside whats best for you. I'm not here telling you you should vote yes. No one should be telling anyone what to vote yes or no it's a personnal choice get the facts!!

Just want to keep everyone

Just want to keep everyone informed the Teamsters trailer will be @ Dot's Flower shop for anyone intersted there will be people to talk with coffee donuts anyone there should be able to anwser any questions you may have or will find them. DON'T BE AFRAID TO COME OVER AFTER THE SAFETY MEETINGS THEY WOULD LOVE TO SEE PEOPLE STOP BY.

joann..you have been told of

joann..you have been told of mtgs because I have told you of every single one I knew about. Which is all of them.  I know that every single driver at sau 16 has been told about mtgs. I have spoken to several that don't even what to talk to me about it. They don't want to be informed. They have made up their minds before getting facts. I think it's good that your asking questions. However it seems to me that your taking in all of the bad. All I can say is what I've been telling you along. Do what's best for you! GET INFORMED! There is always bad points. However there is more good than bad with the union. Maybe you never get treated unfairly but others have. I've seen it many times. I have seen it a resent as last week. Things do need to change. Keep an open mind!

I did not say that I was

I did not say that I was never informed.. What I said was that at the safety meeting the person who was handing out the flyers did not approach me with one.  The people that don't really know whats going on are not necessarily in our district.  Everyone, including charter drivers should have been told.

I am not trying to hear only the bad, I am trying to be realistic about what this is actually going to accomplish.

To kalmon, I, as well as

To kalmon, I, as well as you, came onto this website to get informed. There was nothing under Exeter at the time, so I started reading entries from the other locations.  According to some of their contracts, it sounds to me like they are just as unhappy now as they were beforehand. I would not agree with some of the things in them.  Please take the time to read other entries for yourself.  Maybe you would look at them differently than I would.

I have been to every safety meeting and no one has apporoached me. I was told after the fact that flyers were handed out after two separate meetings by a driver from a district other than mine. I realize that although lots of drivers were informed, that does not mean everyone was.  I still come across drivers that have no idea what is going on.  So I do take it upon myself to tell them there is a meeting coming up and they should go if they want more information.

I am only saying my opinion because I feel that I have read quite a lot of information and have been the only one to write how I felt. Why are we always compared to trash workers?  Can you imagine what it's like to do their job?

Of course if they offered me more money I would take it, but think about this, with the economy the way it is, where would this extra money come from? We need to remember that we have five different districts at our location deciding what each rate should be.

If we cannot maturely work together as a team now, what makes you think that bringing in outsiders would make it any different??

As I stated previously, I will be attending the meeting on Saturday as well as continuing to gather information on my own.

   Hey Joanne I was just

  •    Hey Joanne I was just scrolling through the comments on this sight and couldn't help but notice your opinion was much like mine when Plaistow first started organizing the Union. Much like yourself I felt no need to bring in a second party to fight for what we rightfully deserve. I argued with people and truthfully didn't want to listen. I also made quite a name for myself.  I did however attend the meetings to hear what they had to say. I was up front and honest with the Union rep by telling him I saw no reason to have a union for a small company, as we are per district. My husband is a teamster out of Boston and gets excellent pay and benefits but we all know we can only get so much as a bus driver!!!!!  So I thought!!!!! That isn't the case at all. I sat in as a witness to the vote against the union, totally thinking strongly it would never go through. To my surprise it did what a shocker. It was at  that meeting I spoke with the union rep telling him my honest opinion about how I felt.  That I was embarrassed to admit that my husband is a teamster. That is all well and good with me because of the company and local he is in. I know all  unions aren't the same but they most definately benefit the employee in more ways than one. After my discussion with the rep he said he admired my honesty and thought I would make a good shop stewart. I thought he was crazy and left there thinking how could I after the stink I put up about a union representing us. I went home and thought about it,  read the proposed contract and decided to go with it.  I am a very neutral person I see both sides.  I am friendly with everyone including management and try to do the best I can. Rumors of course still fly there isn't a company out there that has no drama. There are days where it is tricky and trying but definately no different from before. The union has done a lot for us here.  By the way the economy is today I am grateful now for what we did. We have support that is much needed at times. As a former Laidlaw employee lots of things changed with First Student much more rules and regulations,  wich is fine but it can be scary with no support or representation if an accident should occur.  I know drivers that can attest to that. I am willing to answer any questions you may have. Have an opened mind and dont be afraid to ask questions.

Chrisy, All I have to say is

Chrisy,

All I have to say is "Thank You!"  I wanted to get my questions up and you were kind and did not put my words down.  I am not trying to cause problems but some of us feel like we are being attacked.

So Thank You again for your understanding!
