Drivers, Aides and Mechanics - We told you it would be coming and Durham has again proved us right.  During the previous couple weeks before the last elecction they wanted to "Inform" you through mailings, mandatory meetings, one-on-ones and the "Bulletin Board of Shame" and it looks like they have the same game plan this time.  Workers got new letters in their mailboxes Friday telling them that they were going to give them "Factual" information and then they direct you to an anti-union/anti-worker site.  They should have directed you to teamster.org, schoolbusworkersunited.org or Americanrightsatwork.org if they wanted you to have honest information.  Problem is they don't want you to have the honest answers just the ones that keeps them in total control.

You would think that they would respect your desire to have a union when they recieved so few votes in the last election.  They just don't care what you think but that's the same kind of treatment you get on a daily basis from them.  I guess a leopard can't change it's spots.  Durham management would rather drag you into meetings, bury you in papers and drive you crazy rather than accept that you have a brain and free will to act in your own best interest and that of your fellow employees.

You all know what you need because you voted overwhelmingly during the last election that you wanted union representation - the vote count showed and proved this.  Durham just doesn't have the integrity to just accept of your views and leave you alone and just let you vote.  They just have to try and sink their teeth in just a little deeper to try and maintain total control.  Problem is that you are all proving they need a dentist because their teeth aren't as strong as they were.

On the 23rd you will have a choice to all band together and vote to partner with the Teamsters and form a union or not have one at all.  You will have a choice to be able to affect change in your wages, benefits, working conditions, work rules, safety and respect in your workplace for the better or leave your future in the hands of Durham management alone.  I'd rather help steer my future rather than accept what's just given to me.  You are all leaders when it comes to deciding to make positive changes at work by forming a union.

Stand together and say "Enough is Enough".  I want to have a say in the way I and my fellow workers are treated at work.  That we are all professionals that work for Durham.  That drivers do the best job they can to get the kids to and from school safely.  That the aides are partners with the drivers and help keep order on the buses and keep our special needs children safe.  That as professional mechanics we want to be able to repair the buses when they need to be repaired.  That making us wait on repairs because of lengthy paperwork is unsafe for our drivers and aides and for the children they carry.

Everyone needs a pat on the back for the jobs they do.  Good job to the drivers who have to drive in terrible weather condition - thank you.  I can't do without you - to the aides who keep control on the buses so that the drivers can concentrate on the road - your the best.  Your under appreciated - to the mechanics who do a thankless job of keeping the buses on the road under the terrible constraints put on them by both Durham management and the school district - your indespensiable.  You're all on the same ship and need to come together to decide how to sail it.

So with the election coming close show your support.  Wear your buttons and campaignT-shirts proudly and outwardly.  Give a honk to the organizers when you are returning or leaving the lots.  They are there for you and you alone.  Better yet take 5 minutes and go and say hi and get the latest news and plans.  If you have any final questions just ask one of them.  They will give you an honest and complete answer.  Something that Durham management and their "union avoidance" law firm won't do!

Most of all just relax and stick to the issues that brought you to this campaign.  You wanted a change in the treatment you recieve at work.  To be listened to when you have an idea or a concern. To be treated with rrespect and fairness in you work environment.  There really is only one choice if you want change - Support Your Teamsters Campaign

As I have said before,

As I have said before, drivers here now have the teamsters, we cannot be forced to drive a bus with a safety issue.  This was even true before but everyone was afraid to say I am not driving that bus.  Mechanics and management have to work with us instead of pushing the problems on us.  Check your CDL rules and you will find what your job requirement is.  Good Luck.exin itil ccna certification

WE DID

WE DID IT!!!

Durham School Bus Workers at Carpentersville, IL. Are NOW Teamsters!!! The count is in and here are the results:

Teamsters-149 Durham-83

The employees have fought a long, tough battle since April 2007, and anyone who has followed this blog knows the obstacles and challenges they have faced. From the very beginning they have had opposition from Durham as well as the IEA-NEA, the teachers association that once represented the former District 300 drivers before Durham took over the transportation contract in July 2007. There were two prior elections, one in November 2007(which was blocked by the IEA) and one on October 23rd, 2008 which was a three way ballot between the Teamsters, IEA and Durham. Although the last election on October 23 was not a victory, the Teamsters beat both the IEA and Durham by a two to one margin but did not receive the fifty percent plus one margin to win. Durham received one more vote than the IEA so, a run-off election had to be held between the Teamsters and Durham on January 23rd, 2009.

As the numbers above show, the employees have made their choice and sent a message to Durham! I am proud to have been involved in this campaign from the very beginning, first as an employee of Durham at Carpentersville and, as an organizer working with the IBT. I can not begin to say how VERY PROUD I am of ALL the employees who over the last almost two years suffered through so much heartache and relentless intimidation from Durham. The efforts of ALL who stepped up and were not afraid to voice their opinions and feelings towards having union representation, my deepest and sincere gratitude goes out to you! Without your continued strength, commitment, unity and involvement this might not have gone quiet as well as it did.

I ask that ALL Brother and Sister Teamsters give these employees a round of applause for their tireless efforts in achieving their victory! Also a very warm welcome into the Teamsters family, you ALL deserve it!!!!!

Also for any other school bus worker across the country reading this, whether you work for Durham, First Student, STA or any other private school bus company and are considering organizing your yard and becoming Teamsters but are unsure of what to do, read the past blogs and see the obstacles these workers have faced. Through strength, commitment and unity you CAN achieve the same results that these workers have! LET YOUR VOICES BE HEARD!!!

Congratulations Durham employees at Carpentersville, YOU DESERVE THIS!!!!

Remember as always:

Remain STRONG

Remain COMMITTED

Remain UNTIED

In Teamster solidarity always,

Russ Harris

In the area that Hodgkins,

In the area that Hodgkins, Illinois First Student services near my home, in order to get from the west side of the Des Plaines River to the east side, there are four ways to go two of them are bridges that are rated at 5 tons. I have seen Fire Trucks go over them as well as School Buses. The rating system is the weight of a standing vehicle or weight. Think about it, with a bus you are dividing the weight of the bus with the front and rear axle. Your weight is spread out. By the time the bridge would flex at all from your bus weight, providing that you are not waiting on that bridge for a traffic light, you would be over the bridge on the opposite side. So it is 5 tons per axle.
